imp no.1

Since last post we have learned a lot about our friend imp no.1. We learn that his given name is runt, and this fits him perfectly. eventhough he is much older than the other imps he has not yet warped, he is only an awkward cute little creature hated and mocked by all.

He believes himself to be a warlock, which have not existed since demons have been booted from time. But while being challenged by Abbot the "self proclaimed savior" of the demons he magically turns wood into stone. This is additional proof to the fact that he has yet to warp that imp no.1 is not a demon, but a warlock.

We learn about some of the demon history and feelings. Demons love to hunt and kill but their one true desire to to come back to earth and takeover humans, kill them all. to "They will be crushed like the grass beneath our boots. We will tear their heads off like dandilion flowers" (Colfer 75)

artemis and holly come together

proir to this post Holly's and Artemis/Butler's seemingly sererate stories were just waiting to be combined into the complex twisting plot line you can only expect from Eoin Colfer.


While wrapping up her case with doodah day she is approached to work on something new, something big. Artemis Fowl.


"Ill give you two words. Care to Hazard a guess what they are?"

holly knew at once. she felt it.

"Artemis Fowl," She whispered


We now learn that Artemis is smarter than we thought. Yes, we knew he was a genius, but by reading we deepen our sense of the power he holds. He is so smart that he was more accurate in calculating the position of the demon's apperance than fairies and their special LEP forces.


Section eight is a very small specific branch of the LEP. It focuses on the Demons which have been banned to their moon rock Island. The island is protected with a time warp so they have virtually vanished from earth. Occasionally when the lunar rays are strong the demons are pulled back to earth and our time. This is bad for section eight, because they do not want humans to capture and examine demons.

we meet a new character. Imp No1. He is pre-"warp". Warp is like a demon's growing up time. in hours the demon will go from fuzzy and cute to malitious and ugly. We get to know him a bit. He wants very badly to warp. He is the one that Holly is after.

main characters:

Artemis foul: his motivations seem to be that he likes to figure things out. He is a genius for his age and he seems to like the title. He is constantly outsmarting everybody and it seems to bring him pleasure. all he wants is dominance.

Butler: it Artemis's body guard. All he wants to do is make Artemis happy and keep him safe. He likes being big, strong and intimidating people.

Holly: is a fairy officer who wants nothing more to fight crime

Conflict:

the conflict for Artemis is outsmarting and battling the demons. So far he has had a quick encounter with one while traveling through time luckily Butler was able to save him.

Butler's struggle is keeping such a curious young boy out of danger. Artemis is in contact with creatures in worlds that most people are un-aware of. Artemis's wit and search for danger keeps Butler busy at all times

Holly's struggle is trying to work unnoticed. Thanks to her past she is no longer a top agent because she has become a commonly known face. She can no longer sneak up on criminals because they recognise her.

memoirs.. why?!

Why do people write memoirs?
What power is there in telling our own stories?

I think that people write memoirs so that they can release their feelings about a certain situation they were in. Memoirs are also a way to learn from your mistakes and fun times you had. Writing a memoir can help you to think out the situations good and bad. Help you to think about what you and the people around you chose to do and why. Memoirs are a way of thinking things out and starting to release and accept things if you have not already done so. When you accept things and take them as they are you can learn from your mistakes and help others to learn from them too.

There is power in memoirs because writing a memoir casuses a person to become vulnerable and share personal experiences with the reader. This causes builds a relationship. Much of the time people can relate to other peoples memoirs which also helps to strengthen relationships because it gives a feeling of a connection. People can learn from memoirs.

regarding Black Boy:

What types of things does Richard "hunger" for and what are the effects (positive and negative) of hunger?

Throughout the memoir, Black Boy written by Richard Wright, Richard is constantly struggling with a hunger of some sort. But not just a physical hunger for food, Richard also had a deep hunger for an knowledge and a fatherly figure in the absence of his own.

First, Richard hungers for food. "Hungry stole upon me so slowly at first I was not aware of what hunger meant. Hunger at always been more or less at my elbow when I played, but now I began to wake up at night to find hunger standing at my bedside, staring at me gauntly" (Wright 14). With his father gone and his mother not having a job there was not much food to be eaten and Richard was constantly hungered for food, surviving mostly off tea.

Along with physical hunger Richard also suffered an emotional hunger for a fatherly figure. Early on in Richard's life his father leaves him and his family (Wright 15). Yet, even in his fathers absence Richard is somewhat relieved, for when he had been present he was abusive and unloving. "Though i had not known why he was absent, I had been glad that he was not there to shout his restrictions at me" (Wright 15). This missing father figure brough pain to Richard and he craved the affection that he was so deeply missing. "As the days slid past the image of my father became associated with my pangs of hunger and whenever I felt hunger I thought of him with a deep biological bitterness" (Wright 16).

Richard was a very smart student and did very well in school. At one point he even skips a grade. Richard was also named the valedictorian. Yet, he was always striving for a greater understanding of educations subjects like writing along with social behavior. One thing that confused and hurt Richard was that seperation of whites and blacks. Richard is looking for a reason for the hatred and is learning to deal with the discrimination in school when the principal makes him read the speech written by himself and in searching for a job.

Can hunger be posetive?

I personally think it can have posetive effects. Hunger causes a person to push and work for something they really want.

yet, i think hunger is a bad thing. Hunger means there is a lack for something that is needed. thats not good.
